In the myths and religions of ancient Rome Mars was not only the God of war, but also the guardian of agriculture. Today many in Western culture would look at this as something akin to the Chinese concept of yin-yang.

But in early Rome the combination of the characteristics was not seen as a duality. You cannot send an army into the field without provisions. Nor can you work in the fields, where crops would be allowed to grow unless there were protection from those that would do you harm.
